ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED BY

ALABAMA COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

            Additional Scholarships offered to Gorgas Scholars by Alabama Colleges and Universities are listed below. Students must meet individual College or University requirements for admission. Institutions may have additional requirements for scholarship eligibility.

ALABAMA A&M UNIVERSITY will offer academic scholarships to the top finalist and winner.

ALABAMA STATE UNIVERSITY will provide full tuition scholarships to each of the finalists.

AUBURN UNIVERSITY will offer scholarships as follows: The winner will be awarded a four-year, renewable Spirit of Auburn Founders Scholarship (currently valued at approximately $29,000 or $7200 per year). Alternates will be offered four-year, renewable Achievement Scholarship at $6,000 ($1,500 per year). Students must meet all criteria for admission and have a minimum 26 ACT or 1170 SAT score (excluding the writing score) and 3.5 high school GPA. 

AUBURN UNIVERSITY MONTGOMERY will offer four-year, renewable scholarships valued at $1000 or more per year for any finalist, based on full time enrollment. Students must have a minimum 23 ACT or 1130 SAT score and 3.0 high school GPA.

JACKSONVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY indicates that Gorgas winners would be considered for their Leadership Scholarships, which are full tuition scholarships for one year.

JUDSON COLLEGEwill offer a full tuition scholarship to finalists who are women.

SAMFORD UNIVERSITY will offer the following: Winner: $12,000*, 1st-4th Alternate: $6,000* (*Scholarships are renewable for 4 years at the amount listed if all admission qualifications are met. Scholarship recipients should have a 27 ACT or 1220 SAT and 3.6 high school GPA. Students offered multiple awards will receive the greater of the two amounts but not both.)            

STILLMAN COLLEGE will provide a full tuition scholarship to each finalist. The scholarship is renewable for four years provided the student maintains a B average or better.

TUSKEGEE UNIVERSITY will offer one full term (one year) scholarship to any winner who will attend Tuskegee University.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA will offer the top four students tuition scholarships that are renewable for three undergraduate years if the student maintains a “B” average.  Additionally, The University of Alabama will offer the remaining finalists a one-year non-renewable tuition scholarship.  However, if several students decline the scholarship offer, the U of A may be able to renew some of the one-year scholarships if the students are performing well academically.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA IN HUNTSVILLE (UAH) will offer one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 per year to the highest ranking of the winners who chooses to enroll at UAH as a freshman.  This scholarship will be renewable for up to three additional years as long as the student maintains full-time enrollment and a 3.0/4.0 GPA on UAH coursework.  This offer cannot be combined with other offers from UAH.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM will make one $2500 per annum scholarship available to the highest ranking of the winners who chooses to enroll at UAB.  This offer cannot be added to other offers from UAB.  This offer is renewable for a period not to exceed four years.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA will offer up to four, 4-year Gorgas scholarships at $3,000 per year, to any finalist who desires to attend USA.  The scholarship is renewable annually if the student enrolls for at least 15 hours each term and maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA.

UNIVERSITY OF MOBILE will offer to finalists a $3000 annual scholarship renewable for four years.

UNIVERSITY OF MONTEVALLO will offer a Freshman Honors Scholarship to any Gorgas finalist providing the student attains a cumulative 3.00 academic grade point average in high school and a minimum 28 on ACT (or equivalent on SAT).  Freshman Honors Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $3000 per year and are renewable for four years of consecutive full-time study, based on a 3.25 or better grade point average.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH ALABAMA will offer a full tuition scholarship to any finalist, which may be renewable based on ACT scores and other qualifications.

UNIVERSITY OF WEST ALABAMA   will offer a full tuition scholarship to individuals chosen as Gorgas Winners, subject to rules and regulations of the UWA Trustees Scholarship Program.

This form should be created, signed by the 3 IRB committee members, scanned and emailed togorgasscholarshipcompetition@gmail.com or ebbuckner@gmail.com with the subject of Gorgas-student last name – human

Please provide the student name, high school and the institution providing approval. The committee should answer the following questions:

A. Explain why human subjects are proposed or necessary for this project.
B. Describe and assess any potential risk (physical, psychological, social, legal, or other).
C. Describe minimal risks involved and if more than minimal, the consent procedures to be followed and attach a sample of the completed consent form.
D. Describe procedures to minimize risks.
E. Describe benefits to the individual or society.
F. Explain how the benefits exceed the risks.
G. Approved by Institutional Review Board (IRB) (To be completed by the IRB prior to experimentation; a minimum of 3 members required, one science teacher, one health related professional and one administrator)

* If the institution approving this project has a different form that contains essentially this same information, the institution’s form may be used.
