The University of South Alabama, in partnership with the Alabama Junior Academy of Science, will host a virtual Interregional Junior Research Forum on April 25th from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM (Central Time). This event brings together top student researchers from regional and state-level competitions to present and defend their work in a nationally accessible format.
What distinguishes this forum is its use of Frame VR, an immersive, browser-based 3D environment that transforms traditional virtual presentations into an interactive conference experience. Rather than presenting through static video calls, participants enter a shared virtual space where they are represented by avatars, move between rooms, engage in real-time discussion, and present their research in front of live audiences.
Students will be organized into six disciplinary categories and assigned to dedicated virtual rooms. Each participant will deliver a 12-minute PowerPoint presentation, followed by a 6-minute question-and-answer session with judges. The platform enables natural interaction through spatial audio, live screen sharing, and collaborative tools, allowing students to respond dynamically to questions and engage with peers and evaluators in a way that closely mirrors an in-person academic conference.
For teachers and state-level organizers, the use of Frame VR offers a scalable and accessible model for student research competitions. The platform requires no software installation, supports participation across devices, and enables geographically distributed students to engage in a shared scholarly environment. For students, it provides a professional, engaging venue to showcase their work and develop skills in scientific communication, defense of methodology, and real-time academic dialogue.
This forum represents a forward-looking approach to research competition design—one that preserves the rigor of traditional formats while expanding access, interactivity, and national collaboration.
